Heart to Heart

Have patience with all things, but chiefly have patience with yourself. Do not lose courage in considering your own imperfections but instantly set about remedying them-- every day begin the task anew. -Francis de Sales

This is my mantra, right now. It's so true. I have a hard time (the OCD personality that I am) accepting that things aren't always going to be explained or rational, when it comes to relationships. Sometimes they just do whatever they're going to do. You would think I'd already have a grasp of this, being married and all but, little miss stubborn is still having issues...they're improving, but issues nonetheless.

I'm up two pounds from last week, due to the splurge over the weekend. Hubby took me to lunch yesterday and I maintained control, thank goodness. With him training for his show, he's very particular about what he eats and even more so, when we go out. We went for Chinese. He had the Chicken and green beans plate, with a side of Chicken skewers. Protein fest! I had the Beef and Broccoli with lo mein and wontons. We both had the egg flower soup as well. Not bad for lunch and quite filling. Next week, I'll be back in the swing of my workouts. I have been going at lunch (except for yesterday), but I haven't done my morning walks since before I got sick. I'll be happy to have those back again. I'm getting soft and I don't like it one little bit.

This weekend, the babe begins her swimming lessons again. She's excited and so am I. I'll be glad when we can swim together and I can do it without worrying about her too much. I hope that happens soon. We're also (supposedly) having company over this weekend. We'll see. She has a habit of canceling out.

My hubby is so sweet! He put my lunch together last night when he came home from work. It was his off-day, but he worked an overtime shift from 6:00pm to 10:00pm, came home, then went back out to his part-time job and worked 2 hours. Amazing! He came home at around 1ish, washed the dishes and made my lunch. What a prince. (Don't worry...I know how fortunate I am). We're supposed to be going out of town next week. I'm looking forward to getting out of the state for a bit. I always feel so recharged when I do. The babe will enjoy it too, no doubt.

Here's to better days ahead!

The Weekend's a Bust

Friday evening was terrific, don't get me wrong. Hubby and I had our accountant over to complete our taxes for us. We'll be getting enough back to pay off the new appliances we bought last year and the new carpet going down in the basement. So, it's always nice to lessen a debt. After the taxes were done, hubby and I went for dinner at Golden Corral then, off to the movies to see Cursed (Wait for it to come out on video, guys. It wasn't that spectacular).

Saturday, I went over to my mother's to do my daughter's hair and to wait for her (my mom) to help me with a writing assignment I had. My sister came home, one thing led to another and I'm fleeing the seen of an assault. Lovely! Thank goodness my mother came to the rescue and I did not have to receive a citation from the police department (yep. The cops got involved). What the hell happened? I'm a calm, somewhat conservative person. I never even been in a physical confrontation before! Not even in school!! But, as I've always said, everyone has their breaking point and I hit mine on Saturday (literally). I'm not proud or glad about what happened. In fact, I was extremely upset all weekend; however, I am taking it as a learning experience. Recently, the troubles with my family have grown and I can't pinpoint why. We've always been fairly close with little to no conflict. My hubby says that my family doesn't "release" or "talk enough", which is true. We do hold too much in...especially me, when it comes to my sister. I am frank, though. I've always said that I love her, but don't like her very much. The problem exploded when my child got involved. Like a mother bear, I protected my cub to the fullest.

I decided over the weekend that I do not want a relationship with my sister any longer. In deciding this, it changes many things. I will have to change my church and remove her name from my "emergency contact list" at the babe's daycare (anyone who can degrade a child's mother in front of the child should not have contact with the child, in my opinion). I will not be going to my mother's house anymore (but I have no problem with her visiting us). My sister is no longer welcome at my home. You know, it's funny. Just before my mother left Saturday morning, she said that my sister (after agreeing to take care of my daughter Friday night) immediately "dumped" the babe on her (my mom), when she returned from her rehearsal. My mother said it reminded her of when she would go to obligations and leave my sister home with my dad. He would do the same thing when she returned.

My home-life is completely opposite. My hubby would never do such a thing. In fact, he's always trying to carve out time to see the babe. He's even admitted to being jealous of all the time the babe and I have together. In my opinion, that's a real father. (my father was never like that and still, to this day, I speak to him only a few times a year. My sister won't talk to him or my grandmother at all).

This just seems so terrible, now that I'm looking at it in black and white. What's worse is hubby tried to provide comfort by treating me and the babe to all of our favorite things to eat. Granted, they weren't all sinful (but 50% were, for sure). I stepped on the scale Sunday, but probably shouldn't use that number as a judge. I was holding water, completely sore and it was about a half hour after I woke up.

The whole of Saturday, I couldn't talk to my mom because I was talking to the cop. Then, my phone died. Then, when she tried to call me at home, I was in such a state that hubby asked her to call me back. He said that she would call me later. She hasn't called yet (it's now Monday). My fear is that, true to form, she has taken my sister's side, enabled and coddled her, now wants nothing to do with me (gosh, this is awful!!). I'm just numb about that part of it. My sister, I can deal with but my mother? Geesh! Talk about intensifying the crossroads. As if my life weren't already in a state of chaos!

I am so thankful for my husband. He left work when the crap went down to come home and take care of me. He wasn't justifying what I had done, but did remind me that I was human and that I should forgive and try to let go. Best advice, I think. I felt so bad for the babe that I apologized to her continually on the way home. I'm just so glad that she's young because an older child might have truly been traumatized (not that she isn't, but older children have a better grasp of memories). Ugh! I just don't even want to be here today, but I can't be defeated. I will do what I do and pray for better days. I have to. I don't really have a choice.

The Weekend Approaches

I wish I had something exciting planned but alas, this is not the case. I will be doing the babe's hair first thing in the morning. Then, after her nap, I will be journeying to my mother's to write a proposal. Oh, fun. It just doesn't get much better than this!

The cake was a huge success, yesterday (my co-worker ended up sharing with the office). It was gone an hour after she sent the "all staff" email. You would have thought a chocolate cake was gold, the way people were snarfing it down. I guess it's a compliment to my baking skills as well. I had a small sliver myself and it sure was tasty.

I'm really liking these Van's waffles my hubby purchased. They are all wheat, 180 calories for 2 waffles with only 2 grams of fat and 5 grams of fiber. They taste a lot like those Belgian frozen waffles they used to make (the ones that you had to put in the sleeves before microwaving...that's the other thing. You microwaved those puppies, instead of the traditional toasting). The other thing is that they are 3 points (in regards to the WW diet). About 5 total, when you add a bit of syrup. Groovy! I had two this morning and an egg white.

I'm down 1/2 a pound. I hope it's more by the start of next week. I think it has to do with the little walk I took on the treadmill last night when I got home. Boy, was that something. I started hacking like a mad woman after only fifteen minutes (I took it slow, around 3.2 but I inclined to around 6). Not as fast, but a harder walk. I even burned more calories than I normally due. The workout makes the difference in how fast I loose, for sure. I'll take another jaunt this evening as well.

It's in the 50's here and I'm totally loving it! I love spring and can't wait for it to finally arrive. Everything about it is appealing; the colors, the weather, the smells. Wonderful! Here's to having a bit of spring fever and not having anything fun to do this weekend! :-)

Expectations

Primarily, the expectations I have of myself, are way too high (I think). I've eaten hardly anything all week and my weight hasn't changed. You'd think the bonus to being sick would be a bit of weight-loss but noooo. I get stuck in plateau land again. What the hell! I suppose if I were doing the workout thing and burning those extra 3 to 400 calories, I would be seeing a difference. How is it that people starve themselves and loose buckets of weight and I eat barely anything and manage to stay the same? It's so frustrating. Typically, when I get sick, I want to eat everything under the sun (you know, comfort and stuff). This time, I made an effort not to inhale everything I saw and what happens? I'm stuck. Well, I'll try to be patient and see what happens when the workouts start up again. I'm trying really hard to try.

I watched American Idol and saw four of the folks get the big boot. You know, it's interesting that one of those chicks talked about not being seen or getting any exposure while she was on the show. It appeared that the folks that got voted off were folks I hadn't seen much of. I guess if you mug enough for the camera, it sure can help with those votes. I've never voted myself, but I sure have strong opinions about who I like and don't like.

My co-worker's birthday is tomorrow, but she's going out of town so, last night I baked her one of my famous Kaluha cakes. They are divine - devil's food cake, chocolate pudding, chocolate chips, eggs, sour cream, oil, kaluha and powdered sugar. It's enough to make your teeth ache! I also bought her little girlie things (body glitter, nail polish and dangle star earrings). She was mighty happy. It's always nice to get goodies for your birthday. I will never forget how I felt the year my birthday was forgotten. It sucked royally!

Here's to hoping against hope that the poundage begins to leave again.

Feeling a Bit More Like Me

I awakened to a bit more hacking last night, but nothing like the night before. The cold storm is passing and just in time! Our weather, here, is taking a turn for the better. What was initially forecasted as a doom and gloom week, filled with snow and sleet is now predicted to be a sunny, in the 50's kind of week...and I may actually get to enjoy it.

I'm really starting to miss my workouts. I know that I would be making a serious dent in my initial pound dropage this week if only I were busting my butt on the treadmill or elliptical trainer (but this kid isn't crazy. No relapses for me). Hubby was up at 3 this morning doing cardio on the treadmill (he's training for a competition in April). I hope he sees it through. He won his last competition in 2000. I'm not sure if this is a natural or not (the non-naturals do not test for steroids). If it isn't, he will be competing against folks who have used elements other than nature to get bigger. Personally, I think they should all test.

I have no plans for the weekend, but I think it's time to do the babe's hair again. It's looking kind of ratty. She would have the opportunity to audition for a show on Thursday, but we have a dentist appointment (that I had to reschedule and get approved for time off at work), so this audition must not be for her.

Lots of people in my office are turning in their resignations. One gentleman here has been here since (nearly) the inception of the college and his last day is next week. He really got a bum rap from our president and I feel so bad for him on that front, but I am happy that he'll be going somewhere where he feels needed and appreciated. He deserves it. Another lady, of whom I'm pretty good friends with, her last day is Friday. We're taking her to lunch today (Cafe Trang). I can't wait! We both love that place so much and it's not fattening (thank goodness!). I bought her a gift last night at Barnes and Nobel. It's two astrology books with astrology house cards included. She's really gotten into that, so I thought, "What a great thing for her to remember me by". I hope she likes it.

Well, probably should get down to the grind. I'm back-to-back meeting girl today. Yesterday was hellacious! I hope today is a bit more easy going.

Sick All Weekend

Friday, I didn't come into the office at all. I felt horrible! The cold was in my lungs most of the weekend and I stayed medicated and high, while hubby took wonderful care of me. He cooked and cooked so that meals would be available for the whole of th week. What an angel! It was also his weekend off, so he helped with the babe while I rested (My hero!). I'm still coughing a lot, but I do feel much better than I did Friday or Saturday. Resting at night is a trial. I spend it coughing and running to the bathroom (to spare detail, I'll just say that my gag reflex is pretty sensitive). Hubby would wake up and ask me if I was alright. It was a game for me, at times...how long could I go before submitting to coughing hysterics. My eyes watering and my throat burning, it would never last very long.

Monday, I weighed and was 3.5 pounds down from last week. I hope this trend continues (even after I become healthy again). The sucky part is that I can't workout right now. A few minutes on the treadmill and I'd probably cough up a lung...literally! Hubby, the babe and I went shopping a bit yesterday and just walking around the store could prove troublesome. It comes in waves...for a long while I'll go without coughing at all. As soon as it starts, I'm hacking and hacking like a smoker trying to quit. It's annoying, more than anything. I just want it to go away completely.

I watched many a movie this weekend. I know I haven't updated that page in a while, so I'll give my reviews here:

976-EVIL - What a joke! My hubby has this as part of our collection for nostaglia purposes. That's good because there is no validity to this movie whatsoever! The geeky lead, Stephen Geoffreys (now, gay porn star) can't hold this garbage together no matter how effective his acting. Everyone comes across unbelievable and goofy (especially the religious crazed, abusive mother Lucy) What a joke! Still, if you love 80's camp-horror and can handle it for "just fun's sake", then check this one out. Be warned, it probably won't scare you.

The Dunwich Horror - It's interesting that I watched this one. Sandra Dee passed away this weekend. Erie! This is a very different horror film and probably scared the wits out of folks in the 60's. It plays out like a horror novel (and is probably based on one). It was Sandra's last feature film and kicked off Dean Stockwell's career as a character actor. Basically, a young college girl (Sandra Dee) and her friends (another young girl and a librarian/professor/historian) meet up with a historian (Dean Stockwell), of sorts, who is very interested in a priceless book. He succeeds in "hypnotizing" the young girl and finagles it so that she must spend the weekend with him. Meanwhile, we find out that the Dean's character is hated by everyone in the town and is considered a devil worshipper. Not deterred, they begin to fall for each other and Dean's true reason for "kidnapping" the young girl becomes apparent.

Boogie Nights - I don't know why this movie fascinates me so. Mark Whalberg leads an all star cast (Burt Reynolds, Heather Graham, Julianne Moore, Don Cheadle) in this tale about a nobody (Eddie) who becomes a huge somebody (Dirk Diggler) within the porn industry. It lays out the naive, yet driven personalities of these people and how their ignorance to the world outside of their own works to cripple them. I'm not sure if porn stars are really like this, but if they are, heaven help them. It wouldn't' surprise me, since most of them are unable to do anything outside of this profession, once they've become entrenched in it.

The acting is great and the characters are sympathetic, despite the moral depravity.

The People Vs. Larry Flynt - One of Woody Harrelson's best films! He is Larry Flynt. Courtney Love as Althea Flynt is excellent as well. Somebody needs to tell this girl that acting is her calling (cause it sure as heck ain't singing). Larry starts out as poor country boy who ends of the king of smut. Along the way, he teaches the judicial system a thing or two about the first amendment. A very good movie, but I wouldn't use it as a pure source of historical documentation. There are lots of holes, but probably due to the focus of the film.

Casino - Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Sharon Stone as criminals trying to succeed in Las Vegas. I just don't buy Mr. Italian himself as a jewishman, but whatever. The acting is superb and the film stands out as great mobster movie, with a twist (don't watch this if you can't handle a lot of strong language and violence). One of Sharon's best films to date!

Foxes - Jody Fisher was pretty much a seasoned actress (at 18) when she starred in this film. It is a coming of age story, with a bit more involved. Four girls (the grounded one, the vane one, the party-girl and the virgin) at the end of high school, are struggling to hold their friendship together, while trying to assert themselves as adults. Hard lessons are learned and ultimately, they find tragedy and resolve. It was filmed in 80 so, don't expect miracles; however, I think it's a worthy watch.

Mr. 3000 - Cute movie, starring Bernie Mac. Very predictable, but fun till the end. Not as much laugh-out-loud hilarity as I thought there would be. Angela Bassett isn't as over-the-top in this one, but I noticed age catching up with her in this one (not sure why, but it was very apparent).

Oh, No! Now I've Got It!

Yesterday morning, I woke up with the the yucky stuff in my throat. I dismissed it as morning phlem, brushed my teeth, gargled and called it good. By around 8ish, the yuck had returned (accompanied by the scratchy feeling I get when a cold is about to settle in on me). After battling for another hour or two, I felt the cold make a home in my throat. Ugh! By the time I got home, I was miserable. I ate soup, a small slice of bread and a bit of Wheat Chex for desert (believe it or not) and followed it with Tylenol Night Time (w/cool burst). I was asleep before the American Idol credits began to roll.

This morning, I woke up still heavy with the meds, and got on the scale (two pounds down from yesterday). Well, I'm sure it's all water weight but, no complaints here. I'm sure I'll level off by tomorrow. For now, I'm still feeling like a zombie and wish I could be home; however, I'll probably get more rest here because if I were at home, the babe would be home with me...driving me absolutely batty and I wouldn't get any rest anyway. Oh, well. Such is the life of a mother. (We also have visitors coming in from out of town in my office. I'm looking better than I feel, that's for sure).

Let's hope the day goes fast so I can go home and go to bed.

When This Girl Focuses, She Means It!

Down a pound and a half from yesterday (of course, it could be all the water I packed on during TOM, but who cares! It makes me and the scale much more friendly). I am focused, though. Here's what I had yesterday:

Morning (around 7ish) 1 packet of plain oatmeal with splenda sprinkled on top
1 cup of Nescafe Frothe, Amaretto Cappuccino

Mid-day (around 10:30) - one serving of honey/garlic powder and onion powder pretzels

Lunch (12:30 ish after the gym) - Ginger Tofu Shrimp and rice bowl

Dinner (5:45 ish) - 2 Morning Star Farms Charbroiled "Chik'n" (Soy) patties with BBQ sauce
1 serving of reduced-fat Tostitos

8/8 ounces of water

This was a bit slim, compared to what I normally eat. I usually get in one more snack but missed it. I've got my carrots and apple today. I've almost sucked down 32 ounces of water (I had 16 before I left the house this morning). Overall, I'm sure the eating along with all the water is cleansing me of every naughty tidbit I packed on during the holidays. Let's hope so!

Yesterday, I began working on an online course (offered through our University). I worked for about forty-five minutes and the time just flew! Very different from a traditional classroom. Forty-five minutes in a lecture-led room would have lasted eons and I still would have had ten more minutes worth of lecturing to listen too. This was not the case in my creative writing classes. Those were much more fun and not really lecture-based (but I digress). I'm going to work on some more during my lunch hour today, since I seem to be catching a cold. I'm putting up a good fight, but I can feel the cold in my throat (that's how I know...the scratchy stuff appears in my throat as the first sign, along with the extra thick mucusy feeling (sorry for the visual). Then the sneezing follows soon after, followed by the insistent coughing that hangs on for two weeks or so.). It's snowing right now and I don't want to work out, shower and come out in that weather with a wet head. I'll save it up for this evening and walk on the treadmill instead. At least then I'll be inside. Hopefully, I won't be feeling crappy by then so I can still work in the workout.

I actually have tons of taffy and peanut brittle sitting on my desk to share with folks in my office. I haven't even touched it! The peanut brittle was calling my name, then I just drank down 8 ounces of water really fast. You know, that really works (most of the time). Well, I better get back to work and stuff, since it's so much fun.

Feeling Everything

Confident, brassy, sassy, motivated, rejuvenated, empowered, special, lovely...I'm feeling it. Not sure where it's coming from. Maybe it's the half pound that disappeared. Maybe it was the hot night I had with my hubby or maybe it's just the rededication I've made to getting this weight off forever. Whatever it is, I'm enjoying it. I hope no one tries to steal my joy today, I'm feeling sassy enough to tell him/her off!

It's snowing big time here today. It took me almost forty minutes to get into town today (normally, it takes 25 minutes). Crazy! The flakes were huge and sticky. There was some black ice on the highway as well, so everyone slowed down to a snail's crawl to compensate. Of course, I can't complain. If there's one state of driving that Utahns can handle it's snowy driving (they just can't drive during the spring, summer or fall or when it rains. And blinkers? Fugetaboutit!). I'm hoping it calms down before I have to go to the gym, or at least before I have to go home and drive in it. Actually, I'm looking out of my boss's window and all seems pretty clear right now. Man, I can't wait until spring!

I was thinking about making my own Easter dress this year...something vintage. I don't know. I haven't decided. It would be cool, since my goal is to be a size down. I'm looking at the dresses from the 50s , something swingy but not too pretentious. Like I said, I'm not sure if I'll do it but I thought it would be such a springy and happy thing to do for a dress this year.

The sun is trying to peek through the clouds. I'm very happy to see it. Happy Tuesday!

Happy Heart Day

Oh, glorious, oh so commercial Valentine's day! How I used to loathe you so! Yes. It's true. There was a period in my life where I actually hated this holiday. I would even wear black in protest. This was my I-hate-all-the-men-but-wish-I-had-one time of my life. After my hubby, things changed drastically. In fact, it was the first holiday we celebrated, after becoming a couple (boyfriend/girlfriend). Last night, he presented me with about $50 in Victoria's Secret lotions. Yum! (Pure Seduction, Romantic Wish and Sweet Temptation) I gave him a copy of Elf on DVD and Dodgeball (which I discovered we already have) and a new, Faberware rice steamer. He's a brown rice eating whore, so I thought this was appropriate. Our current steamer can make about two cups, where his new one can make twenty. He was most pleased (believe it or not).

I am so freaking focused today! There is truly something to be said about the power of the mind and how we can execute our control. I made up my mind over the weekend to really get serious again with my eating habits. Since I know have a WW calculator, I am no longer keeping my spreadsheet; however, I will keep it close by for reference. It's good to see where you once were and how you got there. So truly, I am talking serious focus here. I've totally psyched myself and feel good about my mind set. I've got some "muses" to help me along and will look back to them frequently for inspiration. Godspeed to me!

The Grammys were great last night! I was most pleased with the music, musicians and the exceptional hostess (I just love Queen Latifah and what a voice!). She's a b-girl at heart, but can still kick up the glam; she keeps it real without sounding ignorant and she's one classy lady. I admire her in so many ways. She was a terrific pick! As for the Oscars being hosted by Chris Rock, I seriously have my doubts. I hope he can pull it off.

Happy Valentine's Day to all!

A Sickly Child

That's what I've had for the past few days. Saturday the 5th, we decided to enjoy the unusually warm weather we were experiencing and go to the park. Although thoroughly bundled up, I believe this is how the babe caught her contagion. We went home after about thirty minutes and the following day, after naptime, she had a 102.5 fever. Yikes! I kept her home Monday and watched the fever go up and down, in conjunction with the Children's Motrin I was giving her. As soon as that stuff wore off, she was back in 102 town again, poor thing. Tuesday, it was better and she seemed to be feeling more like herself. Yesterday, I went ahead and took her to daycare, even though she woke up with a 100.9 temp. I called the daycare at around noonish to find out how things were going. All was well and she was currently taking her nap. If anything happens, in terms of her fever, it will happen after nap," the director told me. I received no phone calls and picked up a happy, but very tired babe.

So, I've decided it's time to get serious about this....this weight thing. I've plateaued again and this time, I'm lingering closer to the 170 neighborhood, rather than the 150 like before. I am still eating a bit more and I'm attributing it to the fact that I have gone soup crazy, over the past few days. I don't know what it is about cold weather or beautiful, pristine snowy days that makes me want to gorge on chowdery soups like there's no tomorrow. It's been blissful, but damaging (I know). I've got to get a hold of myself, seriously! Hubby still thinks I don't eat enough. He's probably right, in one respect: I don't eat enough of the right foods. I definitely need more protein and less carbs in my diet. I'm no Atkins or south beach buff. I believe everything in balance, which means you should have a decent amount of carbs; however, I tend to go way overboard in that department. Secondly, I've also noted that I need a good multivitamin, too. I don't get nearly enough of the "good stuff" and hubby has agreed to help me pick out a good one.

Finally, I've got to shake things up with my workouts again. I saw majorly wonderful results when I was doing TheFirm (not the newest, infomercial crazy ones, but the classics). I pay attention because I know the 80's run didn't realize that jarring your joints is not a good thing, so I compensate but I have to say, the earlier ones are the most fun to watch (especially if your an 80's hound like I am). I know that people think the Mansion-like set and over-caked make-up is way over the top, but I think it adds to the charm of the productions. The music is a bit wacky at times too. Who cares! Susan Harris rocks! My butt (and everything else for that matter) never looked better than when I was doing her tapes on a regular basis. (I wish they would convert the old ones to DVD too.) The only thing I hate is that I know my weight loss will stop again, as my body adds muscle. Ugh! The scale will not be my friend for a while.

My plan is to get a fresh start this weekend. I'll begin with Susan's original workout and go half-amped as the informational portion of the tape suggests. There will be two to three days of soreness and I don't want to compound the agony by trying to be Wonder Woman. Then, I will slowly work in the tape a couple of times a week, while continuing my cardio training (I haven't decided how may days a week I will do that. I'll probably stagger it a bit, and give my body time to recover).

Well, I'll keep as current a post as I can while I "shake it up" over here. I do have a mini-goal in mind: to be able to pick out an Easter dress in at least one size smaller than I am now. That gives me a little more than a month. I believe that is totally reasonable.

P.S. Oh, and just to prove that I'm really not a complete moron, the link above does give an option for The Firm, DVD purchase. :-)

A New Month...really?

It's a new month and I'm feeling great! I worked out yesterday morning and this morning. The plan was to pull double-duty everyday this week, to make up for last week's birthday excitement (that means morning and mid-day workouts); however, I haven't made good on that goal. Yesterday, even though I brought my healthy and nutritious lunch, I opted to take my husband out to lunch at the Firehouse. It was yummy and I ate well to boot! A blackened chicken sandwich with homestyle fries. Okay, maybe I should have had the side-salad instead of the fries, but I figured a small order wouldn't kill me. I left my workout bag here to use for today's lunch instead.

I've been browsing some other blogs this morning and found a couple of interesting ones. I won't list them because I haven't "connected" yet to them. You know, found that something within the writing that reaches your own soul? Once I have that, I'll be sure to share the links. It's also occurred to me that I haven't updated the movies page in a long while. I'll try and tackle that today or tomorrow (lots of meetings coming up so, we'll see how that goes).

I'll be sending my girlfriend my measurements for my bride's maid dress the middle of this month. I think I'll go a couple inches less of what my actual measurements are, considering I plan on being a more svelte me by then (July). I figure, I'd rather go a couple inches less than end up looking like a chocolate bar trapped in a blue tent at her wedding. Yikes! She says she wants us to look sexy and I'm sure sexy doesn't include, "with a side of frumpy."

Hubby and I are still dealing with the issues. Will we move? Will we stay? Will my job allow me to work from home after all? Will I have to take a part-time job? Will I lose my house forever, along with my beautiful dog and cats? Is an apartment in the future for the current homeowners? Oh, boy. I girl could go mad from all the drama! I'm hanging tough and trying to stay strong through it all. I'm also praying a lot. Whether you meditate, pray or chant, please send some of those positive vibes my way. This sister is in definite need.

Happy Birthday to Me!

It's official. I am now thirty years old. Do I feel different? Nah. I've been feeling thirty since around September. It's cool and I'm so cool with it. Actually, it's a great deal better than being twenty, when you're unsure of who you are and where you're going and what in the world your purpose is. I still feel that some times, but I'm definitely more sure of myself.

Yesterday, I received the most beautiful, purple, potted tulips from a coworker. I also received a bottle of champagne from my side-kick, who now works with me. Then, a big bunch took me to lunch at one of my favorite restaurants, Cafe Trang (It's a Vietnamese/vegetarian bistro that has the world's best lo mein, truly!). My hubby took me to McGrath's Fish House, which was wonderful and romantic. I had their Crab Celebration special which was absolutely to die for! I swear, I could eat crabs everyday. When we lived in Florida, I could never get enough. (Thank goodness their good for you.) Afterwards, we indulged in the Apple Crisp and shared it for dessert. When we got home, I turned down the covers to get into bed and out popped the first and second seasons of Seinfeld. Altogether, I'd say it was a red-letter birthday. I'm looking forward to the future and all it has to offer, especially since this year will prove to be the most bewildering (but exciting) year I've had in a long time.

I'll be at the gym during lunch and I plan on hitting the forty-five minute mark today. It should help in breaking down yesterday's splurges. Thank the Lord I've survived another year.

Finding Peace

It's an amazing concept, and a difficult place to achieve. I find that there are times in my life where I feel peace, and I'm not confusing this with contentment. This peace that sometimes settles upon me is much more profound and invigorating than contentment. With contentment, there's the slightest bit of "what if I had.." lurking behind it. This time, I drove to my peace.

The past few days, here in the valley, have been quite mucky. We've had a nasty inversion (for those of you who do not pine away your days watching the weather channel, I'll give you the gist of an inversion). A high pressure front will sometimes move over our state. When this happens, it's like a blockade for everything else, including moisture (that's snow and rain). This front will actually trap in all of the smog and yuck for days, sometimes weeks without any sign of relief. It usually takes another pressure front (low) or a serious storm or wind to push it away. We've been suffering with this one for about two weeks. All the stuff in the air can make you cough something wicked and it keeps the sun at bay, which can aid in the winter blahs. Friday, I'd had enough and had decided that I would drive up into the mountains to get away from it for a bit.

Saturday morning, the babe and I set out for our adventure. We've made this drive plenty of times but, I wanted to make a couple of stops first. I succeeded in getting us very lost in the process, but eventually made my way of Weber canyon. Breathtaking! Every time we make this drive I am amazed at how beautiful it is. Of course, I didn't think to bring my camera but I have taken loads of pictures of it in the past. Anyway, we made our way up and out of all of the smog. The narrow winding road widened to expose a very frozen lake and beautiful snow capped mountains. The babe and I stopped at the end of the canyon and had lunch in an old, rustic log-cabin cafe. A roaring fire awaited, along with wonderful hot, creamy potato soup.

After lunch, we continued our drive to Huntsville, making our way to the monastery. The land was wide and vast, covered in snow and glistening under the bright sun light. It was magnificent. We exited the car and went to the gift shop, just at the opening of the dormitory. Father Patrick greeted us with a smile and allowed us to roam the shop freely. I picked up a St. Francis of Assisi medallion (I am not catholic, but he is the patron saint of animals and I've always felt close to him) and a prayer book for the babe. I also purchased honey that the trappists monks there make. Once we made our purchases, Father Patrick allowed us to visit the church. We entered the cathedral to complete silence. At the back (front) of the building was very crystalline, blue and red stained glass with the image of the virgin Mary and the baby Jesus. Flecks of gold could be seen around their heads in halo form. Just beneath the glass was an alter and to the left and right, folded seats for the choir. Several pews were located on each side of the church, with kneeling benches. Above was a balcony where several folded, wooden chairs were housed. The babe marveled while I took in it's simple beauty. We wandered around for about ten minutes, then left. The perfect ending to a lovely day.

Something settled over my heart while I was there, and it didn't surprise me in the least. There must be an amazing amount of positive energy within and around a place like this, with all the praying that is done on a day-to-day basis. I would guess that the men who live within those walls must be happy in a way that most people have never experienced. I admire their lifestyles, but I don't believe it is something I could ever do. Not because it isn't within me to do it, but because I enjoy mankind too much to be completely separated from it. As crazy as humanity can be, I don't want to be apart from it.

The weekend went well. I showed more control than I've shown over a weekend in a long time. I weighed today and showed a bit of a loss. Tomorrow is my birthday and I am allowing myself to enjoy it, but I will try not to go too overboard. I'm still aiming for complete fabulousness.

The Time of Aquarius

It's the 21st...hallelujah! Finally out of that blasted, stifling Capricorn period. Now, I can be expressive, inventive and carefree...well, at least I have an excuse to try to be expressive, inventive and carefree.

Hubby and I are talking again, thank God! It was a soulful night of reaching out that we had last night. We're both sad about the impending loss of our house, but are happy about making a new start. Man, it sounds like we're filing bankruptcy or something. Trust me, we haven't resorted to those measures and I sure hope we never do. We've just determined that selling our house and moving back into an apartment was the best way to conserve money and allow me the ability to work part time, in order to see to the Babe's needs once school starts. All this will have to happen before August, of course. January is nearly over. I've got a pretty good idea of how fast August will get here. A new spice to the pot? We're leaving Utah...I think. Well, I told hubby that I was okay now with moving, if that was something he still wanted to do. I think it rejuvenated him because he called and had all these ideas of places were we could go. Places with warmer climates and less snow, places where black people aren't stared at like freaks at a freak show, places where mormons and conservatives do not reign. I, myself had done my own bit of research. If we had our druthers, we'd want to be in California. I hope that can happen for us, but who knows. We're pretty flexible. As long as there's steady work and good schools, we'll be fine.

I'm really doing well (the control thing again). I've decided that weekends will be the ultimate test, since I tend to lax so much during those troublesome days each week. I know if I can maintain my drive and control during Saturday and Sunday, it will only help to aid in the process. I've seen it before! Just looking at my spreadsheet tells me that the most dramatic losses occurred when I was drinking my water regularly, exercising and maintaining my diet for an entire 7-day week period.

It was a pretty good day, overall. I've got a lot on my mind with all the talk of moving, but I'm continuing to look forward to the future. I knew this year would bring change, but boy, the changes that are to be had!

Emotions Simmering

I woke up at 4, but I wasn't interested in working out. I shook my husband lightly who, amazingly, stirred at the first push. I needed to find out what was going on in his head. Why he had come to bed late every night this week. Why he showered my daughter with love and happiness, but only gave me the cold shoulder. There's a lot going on, I know but it was feeling more and more like resentment. I just needed to hear from him if my suspicions were correct. He said that his quietness for the last few days wasn't about me. That if he'd been snippy or short, that he hadn't meant to be...that he's just "dealing with things". Well, I can understand that. I'm dealing with the same things. In fact, some of my stuff isn't even worth his worry because I know he's dealing with so much. He asked me to tell him what was going on in my mind. I was hesitant, as I always am with my issues. I always feel like they're so small compared to what he's enduring (him being the man, double-standard or not, he feels the weight of the family rests on his shoulders and his shoulders alone), why should I plague him with my stuff? At any rate, he got it out of me.

Lately, I've been having drama with my mother (she isn't even aware of it, but she will be when I have lunch with her tomorrow). She makes all kinds of snide remarks like, "I'm so glad my children are grown," and "____isn't as well behaved as my children were," or, "She doesn't listen to me." Mind you, it's just small stuff but, still it bothers the crap out of me. When I first became pregnant with the babe, I would ask my mother if she was excited about the new baby or becoming a grandmother. She'd very plainly tell me, "no", and say that she'd already raised her children. It wasn't a big deal. That same attitude has persisted and the babe feels it, I know (it's true what they say...children are very perceptive). My mother has never been the matronly type and she's definitely not the grandmother type. She never wants to spend time with the babe and on the rare occasions she does, she always harps about the babe's attitude towards her or her behavior. It feels as if she's saying, without actually saying it, "You're not as good a mother as I was." It's starting to make me crazy. Besides all that, she's turning into one of those bitter old people that does nothing but complain. She's so judgmental and negative about everyone and everything! I will do my best to tactfully talk about these things with her, but I know her better than anyone. I'm almost certain she'll write it off and not take anything I say to heart. Hubby says that I'm assuming and making prejudgements myself by thinking that's what she'll do and maybe I am but, something tells me I'm right about this call. (God, I hope I'm not). I guess I'll see on the morrow.

Despite all of the craziness, I'm doing well on my plan. I think I can pinpoint the exact reason why: it is the one thing I can control in my life, right now. Seems accurate, don't you think? My job maybe gone in 8 months (who knows), my daughter will be out of daycare in 8 months, I may have to sell my home and I'm almost certain I'll have to take some bogus, part-time job that's unfullfilling and pays nothing, in order to be there for my daughter. Hey, that's chaos at it's best. I, however, can determine what goes into my mouth and how much I exercise. And that's what it's about, so often with women who are trying to loose weight...the control. On a subconscious level, I probably decided that if I lost control of this final element in my life, then there's nothing. I will have succeeded with enveloping myself in total chaos...it's pretty much my biggest fear.

I wish there was something happy going on, besides the weight loss, to kind of put things in balance. We're supposed to go to Florida, but I can't even think about that right now. It will need to be sooner rather than later but, ugh! That's just more drama. Being the eternal optimist, I'll just continue to hope and pray that things will get better and maybe all that good karma I sent out will make it's way back to me.

Wishing and Hoping and Praying

I tried on one of my skirts today, a neat little number with a subtle animal print...about 4 inches above the knee...size medium. It was not cute. I mean, it didn't look horrible, but I've definitely seen it looking better on me (sans the big bubble that is my belly, just above my knees). If for nothing else, I have to drop these few, troublesome pounds in order to get back into my cute clothes (comfortably). I've gotten off to a good start, as I've said earlier. It's going to be a difficult road, you know, especially with all the drama going on in my life, but I will persevere!

I changed my spreadsheet a bit, to reflect WW points now. I thought I'd give it a go and see where it takes me. Couldn't hurt, right? Besides, it's basically what I'm doing already, except they incorporate fiber and protein, where my plan does not (it really should). I even ate cottage cheese this morning. It was okay. I didn't remember what it tasted like and I had hubby buy me some a week or so ago, since I haven't had any since probably childhood. It's not something I'd want to eat all the time, that's for sure. I know it's a great source of protein and has very few calories so, maybe I'll have to (in the beginning) to aid in the process.

Hubby and I aren't talking a lot right now. We're both going through stuff and I think we're trying to spare each other of our trials. This is not a good thing, since we should be sharing. A lot of times, I'm very selfish about my problems, you know, not wanting to burden anyone else with them (especially my hubby). He's got a part-time job now (along with his full timer), he's still working on the basement and now he's working on getting new carpet in? It's insane! Plus, I know he's gotten really homesick and wants to see his family. Meanwhile, I'm trying to plan this Florida trip all while knowing that my job may be gone in 8 months, along with our house. Good Lord! What's a woman to do! Oh, and the thirtieth birthday will be here next week. Next week?!

Yeah, okay. I think I need an addiction for a while. I choose French Vanilla Cappuccinos. They're only 2 points and a great treat, in my book. To allow myself the addiction without the added guilt, it will be decaffeinated (not much of an addiction is it). Well, never mind. Who needs to stress of trying to break an addiction anyway! (Did you see that? I started and overcame in one paragraph. I wish life were so easy).

My hair is coming back. I don't think I mentioned that I shaved a bunch of it off. Don't worry. It's really not as bad as it sounds. There's still a lot on the top and it's growing in quite healthy. Hubby took off the back and got it down to about half an inch. He didn't want me to, but he said that if I had to do it (hair was falling out in clumps) that he'd much rather help me, in case I messed it up. Getting it healthy. That's the goal. I pretty much fried it with all of the coloring I was doing. I've gotten the color bug out of my system, now. I'm sure it will be another ten years before I do that again. So, who knows what I'll do next (thank goodness for my wigs).

No Babies Coming

Well, Aunt Flow showed up the evening of the fourteenth. I was somewhat relieved, somewhat saddened at its arrival. You know, not that I need any extra stress in my life but, a new baby is still exciting. Oh, well. I just figure it's not time yet and that's okay.I had my review and brought up the "work from home" request again, beginning in August (if at all possible). It was met with a maybe, and a side of "probably not" response. So, that means I'll have to find a part-time job in the city where we live and save up enough to keep me a float till that job comes. But, we'll probably have to sell our house and settle for a condo. Oh, how I'll miss my house! I love my house! But, the babe comes first and I'll do what I have to for her.I spent most of yesterday and Friday crying...mourning the loss of my house. I figure, better to get it out of the way now rather than be crushed and devastated in August or whenever it happens (if, but most likely will). I need to be happy when the babe goes to school, or I'll really be depressed was on the elliptical trainer for 35 minutes today at lunch (trying to build up to 45, which shouldn't be too difficult). I've gotta get movtivated and get up at 4:00a again for that extra cardio in the mornings. With the rough weekend, I didn't get a lot of sleep. I'll keep working at it. I'll try and stay positive. It's 2005, after all.

Weighting and Weighting...

Something's going on. (I'm going to be specific, so if you're squeamish, leave now and wait for Monday...) During the month of December, my hubby and I were "gettin' it on" regularly. Well, most of the time we are able to control our passions and reach for the Trojans (I don't do birth control pills, shots or insertions. I can't. The first and only time I took it, it made me crazy. I spotted the entire time and cried at everything. I ended up ditching the last four pills and gave them to my girlfriend, who gave them to her plants. They were much happier about the hormone dosage than I was.) . Besides, the Trojans have always served us well and we've had no complaints, once we found the right type. -Anyway, back to what I was saying- There were a couple of times we didn't dip into hubby's trusty, bedside drawer. We weren't really worried because it took my body two years to adapt to his sperm and conceive. Well, it may be that body adaptation got a turbo boost.

New Year's day, me and the family were at the Virgin River Casino, enjoying a nice buffet breakfast. Afterwards, we adjourned for the restrooms. As I looked down at the crotch of my underwear, there was a noticeable amount of blood. Now, most would say, "Oh, flow's in town. Let me whip out the tampon or the pad," but flow had already visited just a week before, so it wasn't her. I would say, a bit more than a spotty amount is what I saw. I was immediately transported back to the winter of 1999 when I saw the same thing, shortly after learning I was pregnant. I finished, walked out of the bathroom and told my hubby what I thought. The entire ride from Mesquite to Las Vegas, we talked about the possibility of a baby and how a second child would change our lives. We were a bit fearful, but excited.

When we returned to our condo in southern Utah that evening, hubby and I stopped for cheapy pregnancy tests. I knew that it was a slim chance that I would see anything, especially since I hadn't missed a period yet and there would be very little if any of the detection hormone. I took the test and it was a flat negative. Well, I already told you all about my episode on 1/05 (see my entry). When I went to the doctor, I did mention the spotting. He asked if I could be pregnant and I said, "Yeah. It's possible". He told me to wait until a day after my period shows because anything before would be a waist of money (where was he New Year's day??). It's weird because I think I've been doing the PMS thing, these past few days and I've got one of those period pimples in my nose (you know, the kind that hurt like hell and then just disappear as quickly as they show up?) so, I'm not sure what to think.

Notice today's date? Yep. I'm still spotting, and with benefits. There are congealed elements (see, I told I'd get detailed) that look a bit like clots, but much, much darker. I asked my mother about the spotting last night on my way home from work and the first thing out of her mouth was, "Could you be pregnant?"
"Well, yeah. I could be."
"Hmm. Thirteen days. That's the only thing I can think of."
"But,thirteen days of implantation spotting? Really?"
"Well, maybe your implanting twins."
(Nice answer, mom).

Well, to say the least, I will be using the second part of the test I bought in southern Utah, next week, if this is still going on. I'm still not completely sure what to think about all this. I have the babe starting regular school this coming fall (wow), possibly a new baby coming (double, wow) and my life twirling around in front of me (Oh, and I have my annual review with my boss this afternoon. Nice.). Of course, I've always believed children are blessings and I also believe God never gives you anything that you can't handle. It's still a great deal to think about. Something that also came to mind is the fact that my best friend is getting married this summer. Oh, man. If I'm too far along, I won't be able to fly, but I have to be there. Driving to Nashville in the middle of summer, and pregnant, does not sound fun at all. Ughh! See? A lot to think about.

Meanwhile, I've already decided that I will continue working out and eating healthy, two important steps I did not take when pregnant with my first child. I've learned my lesson there. I'll be sure to post, just as soon as I find out (okay, maybe a few hours after I wake up from passing out), but that won't be until next week. I'll be officially late (if I am) on Wednesday.

My Anniversary and Deep Thoughts

Tuesday was the 8-year anniversary of being with my husband. I said, "I love you," to him exactly 8 years ago. I took the day off and we went to the movies. We saw The Forgotten. It was great, until the end when it totally coped out. I sometimes wonder if writers run out of steam or if their getting pressure from the movie execs about time crunches. Either way, they do themselves a true disservice by not creating to their full potential. Run out of steam? Stop and come back to it later...years, if need be. Movie time constraints? Rip up your contract (okay, so I know it's not that easy).

The entire day was rainy and we spent most of it running to stay dry. We had lunch at Pei Wei, which was tasty for me (Pad Thai with Chicken), but not so impressive to my hubby (Mongolian Chicken). It was also very crowded and they sat us at a table too small for a toddler. I gave him the first season of The Shield as a gift. He was ecstatic! I received my gift last night...he's returned to day-shift. Hallelujah! I was so happy, I wanted to cry. Graveyards have been hard for us. He never gets enough rest and I don't get to see him like I want to. He felt the same way. He also warned me that if he gets the job he wants at the airport, he may have to go to swing shift. Ughh! That's even worse, but we'll make do. We always do.

I've been thinking a lot about all this craziness with the weather everywhere. It's really frightening. You can't tell me that the Tsunami didn't effect everyone. An earthquake of that magnitude is bound to effect, not only the very traumatic events we saw but also the way the weather is impacted. The whole of North America seems to be swimming in water of some sort, whether it be snow or rain. Places that never get snow, are now getting it...places that typically have harsh winters, aren't seeing the worst in a century. I just hope mother earth is calmed soon. So many people have lasts their lives in recent weeks. I feel for their families. The photos of the Tsunami, the mudslides in California, the flooding here and in other parts of the country, just make me want to cry.

I've lost two pounds since last week. I've gotten off to a good start and seem to be going full steam ahead. My little one was coughing something wicked this morning. I hope I don't get another call. I suppose that's what the fever was last weekend...her body trying to kill the cold (or whatever this is) that was trying to attack. Well, it succeeded. I just want her to get better soon, poor thing. She was up and down all night. I didn't get a lot of sleep and I was kind of snippy to her. I hope we both feel better before the day's end.

Sick mom, sick babe

The strangest thing happened Tuesday afternoon. I was on the elliptical trainer and after about five minutes I got incredibly nauseated. I went another five minutes and it got worse. Thinking I should just work through it, I continued and at the sixteen minute mark, I got off, nearly ready to pass out. It was so weird! I stumbled into the locker room and immediately called my hubby. I could barely hold the phone, let alone get dressed (which I know is totally gross). I'm sure I grossed out the ladies at the gym, who had just showered and were changing while all this was going on.

I made my way back to the office to get my purse and keys, I then headed to the daycare to pick up the little one. I made an appointment and saw my doctor an hour later. He gathered it was a mild case of gastrointenitis (sp?) but I clearly didn't have all of the symptoms. So, I went home and took a two-hour nap. By Friday, I was getting a call from the daycare telling me that the babe had a 102.5 temperature. Not good. I raced over and picked her up. As soon as we got home, down with the Children's motrin. Poor kid. She was like a 29 lb furnace for two days. Yesterday was the first day without a fever and her appetite had returned. All seems to be well on the home front. I just hope hubby doesn't get whatever this is.

Meanwhile, I totally went over board on the comfort foods during the weekend (The week went great). I worked out this morning for forty-five minutes and totally felt it. Boy oh boy, what a couple of days of splurging can do to a body. You'd think I would have learned by now. Humans are just hard-headed in general, I think.

Well, it's back to work. There are 184 emails waiting for me to do something with them. I wish I could just highlight them all and push delete. I wonder how that would go over!

A New Year and Simply Fabulous

I gotta tell yah, I am so happy that the new year is here. It just couldn't get here fast enough. 2004 really blew and I mean from start to finish. There were a few small highlights, but all the bad just seem to overshadow them. When the new year ball dropped and everyone screamed, I screamed right along with them. Holding my hubby close, I made optimistic promises that I know I will keep.

This site is about my weight loss journey, but also about my personal journey. For the first time in my life, I know who I am. I am comfortable with who I am and I am at peace. For years, I think I was swimming around trying to find me - dressing myself up in new ways and allowing myself to synch-up with whomever I found interesting. It's not about finding the pieces of you in others so much as it is finding out how the real you gels with everyone else. The real me is not glamorous on the outside. I look more home bodyish than anything, and that's okay. I have average-sized feet and am way short. My teeth are crooked and I have myopia. My arms are huge for a girl, but I have the tiniest fingers. As with any woman, I deal with my little insecurities but, you know what's important? I am kind. I believe in people, no matter how much they don't believe in themselves. I am loyal and trustworthy. People feel comfortable talking to me. I have repoire with nearly everyone I meet and I am genuinely missed when I leave a place. I am a pop culture nut and can remember minute details about some things, and miss them entirely in others. That is who I am. That is me, no matter how much weight I put on or take off, no matter how many colors I dye my hair, no matter where I may live.

So, I will be here, most days (I can't promise everyday because "life" is always happening) working hard to get fit and into shape and trying desperately not to lose my sanity in the process. It's a work in progress, this me...and, I'm okay with that.

Wow! It's been a While

I'm still here...living and breathing in moromonville, I am. No kidding! Enjoying the holidays a little too much (check past posts...I was worried this would happen). Never fear! I didn't put all the weight back on, I'm guessing about five pounds. I start my new plan on Monday. Christmas is over and there's nothing left but to get smaller and smaller. I'll be able to put the treadmill back in the living room (It's been facing a while near my daughter's play room for the past couple of weeks, due to the space problems the Christmas tree has presented). On other fronts, my new year's resolution is to take better care of myself. I already work out and eat pretty good. This "better care" goes beyond the working out...it has to do with how I dress, wear my hair, my skin, all the outside stuff I usually neglect. I'm going to do it for the big 30 (which is exactly one month from today!).

Hope everyone is having a joyous holiday season. I'll be on vacation until the start of the new year, so I may or may not come in to post. I'll be much more regular (he, he) after the vacation. I have new help who actually comes to work and, get this, works! I'm so happy about that. It will make for a lot more posting, now that I'm not overly stressed about getting everything done. "C" as I'll call her from here on, is terrific. I'm hoping for the best.

Till next year! :-)

Super-Tuesday and Our Country

Yes. I'm proud to say that I voted bright and early, yesterday. Unfortunately, I don't think it did much good. I'm in a staunch, Republican state and there's rarely an opportunity to overcome it. Not to say that I'm a straight party-voter, but I do want what's best for our country. A nice balance is always good, but we've got a definite, controlling power on our hands again. I really feel divided on all of this. Would Kerry have been a good President? Will Bush really tackle the issues and stop being a moron? I don't know. It's all very disheartening. I just wish our troops would come home. Then, we should take care of domestic issues before trying to take on everyone else's. I'm not very political at all, but that's how I feel.

There is water weight with me. Oh, yuck. Also, I padded myself a bit during the Halloween festivities of last week. We had a lot of fried goodies (catfish and hushpuppies), and an assortment of chocolate goodies. Thankfully, I haven't gone overboard. The problem is, I keep getting invited to lunch and I'm not turning anyone down. I need too because I'm missing workout days galore. This week, one of my engagements cancelled, so I will be able to get in my normal amount, if not more of my workouts. I also plan on getting in my good one on Saturday, too (now that swim lessons are over). They'll start up again in January. Oh, and I recently discovered that Wednesday's are dollar-days at the pool. During Christmas vacation, perhaps the babe and I can get in some awesome swim time for cheap.

I really need to regain my focus. I can't be hot by thirty if I'm eating Halloween candy. I'm on my way! Hubby gave me my new plan to start next week and I am so geeked about it. I know that it will get me close, if not completely to my goal. The weight training and cardio begins for the next four weeks, then the diet change. We will get our two splurge days; Thanksgiving and Christmas. Other than that, there's no more eating out and everything is being cooked at home (except for these blasted lunches I keep getting invited to).

I've also said to myself that I can't buy anymore frocks or cutsie clothes until I get off these couple of pounds that have creeped onto me over the past two weeks. I also want to document more here on the blog (which I will). No empty promises. I'll just keep saying it until I darn well buckle down and do it. The calorie count is still at 1400, but I've gone over all weekend and the end of last week. This week has gotten off to a pretty good start. I will be back in the swing by this weekend (I'm positive). If for nothing else than that I am eyeing another tunic that is so pretty (check out Newport-News' Kimono Tunic). The model is wearing it in black. Can't be a big girl in a top like that. :-)

Not Enough Hours in the Day

How often do we say that? Man, it's been like that all week for me. Monday, we came in to more problems with the system (not nearly as many as last week, but still more than I would have liked to have dealt with). Tuesday, I got my days mixed up and thought our accreditation visitor was coming, so I got all dressed up and left my gym bag at home. Oh, well, he didn't come till Wednesday. Okay, so Wednesday, I'm all dressed up again, no gym bag, and he doesn't even see or talk to me. I could have showed up in sweats and it wouldn't have made a difference...okay, well maybe but, goodness!

Yesterday evening, the babe's goldfish died, so we had to have the death talk. Then, we went to Wally World for a new Beta fish. She loves it! I hope he lasts longer than "Bark" (the goldfish). This one's name is Spot. [smile]

People at Wally world are crazy and manic around this time of year. The holidays are approaching and they just come out of the woodworks and loose their minds! It's so annoying. Well, after an hour in Wally World, we stopped and got dinner, then made it home to eat. After that, I had to sew a piece of material for a friend's costume. Not sure how I got roped into that one, but I think I accomplished what she wanted. Tonight, I have to do the babe's hair and make the apple crumble for tomorrow's pot-luck. It should be fun!

Saturday, is our fish fry. So, Saturday morning it's "clean, clean, clean" until the house is spot-less. Than watch as our guests succeed in crapping it all up again. Why do we do it to ourselves? It's all about image and our egos, I think. We can't stand the thought of having someone say, "Eww! Have you ever been to the ????'s house? It smells like cat pee and looks like wolves live there." Thankfully, I don't think anyone's ever said that. [smile]

Here I am!

Yes! Truly. I didn't drop off the face of the earth or anything. It was a nightmare of a week, last week, and I could barely breathe much less type anything down. What a mess! We have this new system that, of course, is supposed to be the answer to everyone's prayers and is this great IT accomplishment. W-R-O-N-G. It has done nothing but screw it up from the time it was launched and, of course, there are only a select group of people being affected (I am so fortunately included in this group....can you feel the sarcasm??). Anyway, things have leveled off a bit, but there are still problems. The biggest problem is that this masterpiece of technology will be available to all of our students Monday, November 1st. I think I'll call in sick that day.

Believe it or not, all is going well on the eating and work out front. A little splurge here and there, but really well on all fronts. In fact, I feel a bit smaller (even though the scale isn't reflecting how I'm feeling or looking). I'm chalking it up to muscle mass. That's the only thing it could be, right? Fat never looked this good (okay, that was probably way too much ego for this blogger). Friday, we'll be dressing up and partying down to a good, old fashioned pot-luck. I've decided to make apple crumble, since it was such a treat the last time I made it at home. Why not share the wealth? There's a lady here's who's decided to go all out with her costume. The crazy thing is, the costume is probably a bit revealing (she's going as a green fairy). She's over 6 feet tall and lost a lot of weight fast, before taking her job here. Consequently, she's probably put some of it back on and it's all centered around her middle. I'm just worried, that's all....for her, I mean. I really hope she's wearing a dress and not a leotard or anything. That could be frightening, even to frightening for Halloween.

The babe is going as a cat. I was smart and didn't tell her I have her costume and she hasn't seen it. She's at the age where she will ask about things a thousand times and make you absolutely crazy! I've learned to keep secrets to the very last minute, where she is concerned. We have company coming over on Saturday, and she doesn't know anything about that either. They'll just show up and she'll think they're there for her. It should be interesting.

I hope to be more consistent this week. I'm praying really hard that I don't have a week like last week. The stress was so bad it manifested itself in my shoulders and neck. I needed a massage bad! Too bad the massage college is so far away. I would have been there quick and in a hurry!

The Ethics of Employees

This seems to be on my mind a lot lately so, I'm going to get on my soap box about this for a few minutes. What, indeed, has happened to the ethics of workers? No one seems to care about the quality of work, much less coming in on time. People complain constantly about work and how they're getting screwed in some form or fashion, but no one is stepping to the plate to take action about these troubles. Could this all be stemming from our downed economy and lack of jobs? People are whining more because they don't have what they want or need, but they are unwilling to give 100%. There are a few people here who fall into that category. It just amazes me! Maybe I'm too ethical. Can there be such a thing?

I'm having a budget gourmet and baked potato for lunch. I'll be going to the gym at the end of the day, simply because my morning has been so chaotic. I weighed in and I'm still within the three pound zone, but I'm not stressing it. Not in the least.

It's Gettin' Cold, Here!

Today, are high is supposed to be somewhere in the mid 50's. What's interesting is how are bodies react to these temperature changes. For example, if I said that it was going to be in the mid 50's during the month of March, we would all feel that sense of relief felt when spring is on the horizon. During the month of October, it's always the beginning of the "Big Chill". In fact, they've stated that there will be at least several feet in the mountains, before the weekend arrives. Is that crazy or what? This weekend, I'll be doing my big "switch over", bringing my fall clothes up and taking my spring ones down.

I think that'll I'll have to do the unspeakable and buy more clothes, again. All of the shopping for new sizes was for spring-like clothing. All my fall gear is going to fit like tents (highly unattractive!). I'll have to send hubby out on a mission for fall-gear.

I stepped on the scale at the gym and it said somewhere in the neighborhood of 158 (that was with my undershirt, bra and panties on). I really think not consuming myself with these numbers is really making a difference. I've started on my L-Carnitine again, but I'm only working out once per day. I'm also eating more. I must have been starving myself without even realizing it. Like they say, everyone is different. Just because 1200 is just above starving for most folks, doesn't meant that this applies to me. I'll keep on trekking forward with this and, hopefully, good things will come.

The doggy seems to be doing much better. He's on an antibiotic, Imodium AD and I/D formula science diet dog food (which he gobbles up readily). He will be such a happy dog when he can finally sleep inside again and can eat his regular food.

-UPDATE 2:15 PM MST - The movie information has been updated. :-)

The Doggy's Still Sick, but on the Mend

After two more days of runny bowels, we just can't take it anymore. We tried pedialyte, pepto, everything we could think of to quite the poor doogy's tummy, but to no avail. Today, hubby took him to the vet and his suspicions were confirmed: once it started, it stressed him out so he couldn't stop. Now, he's on Imodium AD and an antibiotic to balance his gastrointestinal bacteria.

We weren't angry with him for the mess he made. It was just really frustrating to deal with. We finally started keeping him in the garage at night, simply because concrete is much easier to clean than carpet. Why not leave the pooch outside, you ask? Well, this kind of ties in to where his troubles started in the first place. Our dog is very sensitive...emotionally. We think he might have been abused early in his life. By the time he made it to his foster mom, the damage was done; however, she worked with him and he became the kind, fun loving dog we have now. He still has residual issues that surface every now and again. Basically, his diarrhea started as a result of his nerves. Something upset him enough to make it go into overdrive. After that, it was a flood of poo. Eww, and the smell! I'm surprised I even got it out of the carpet the first time.

Hubby and I will rent an industrial strength cleaner, just as soon as he clears up and has a bath. We want to make sure any stains or leftover smell are gone for good. We really felt bad for him because we took up his food and everything to try and wait it out. Last night, I was grilling chicken breasts on my George Foreman grill. I thought he was going to go into fits! He was so hungry. We finally had to let him out to save him the grief, poor doggy. I thought, perhaps, he had giaria (sp?) but it's just a case of the nerves.

I was proud of myself this weekend. I took two days off from my workouts, but I ate well. The only splurge was an apple crumble I made. The recipe called for "greasing" the pan along with "butter". I used no-stick spray and light margarine. I could definitely tell it wasn't as rich as the crumbles I've had in the past, but boy was it a nice alternative dessert. Yum! (I even topped it with Light, Dreyers Vanilla Bean ice cream.)

I'm feeling better about the way I'm handling things, now that I'm not feeling the pressure of the weigh ins (although, I'm still keeping up for myself). I don't know what it is. I guess in some way I feel (and know) this information is on display for lots of eyes and I must make sure I keep up with appearances. Pah-lease! I'll do that when I'm in my right mind, again (or did I ever have a right mind? Who, knows).

I saw a job opportunity in my field and it pays more by the hour; however, it's only a 30hour per week job and that would mean a pay cut of nearly 10K a year. I'm thinking of the bonuses - less gas, no car payment, no daycare. The cons - less money, basically a lateral move, no ability to save for more (after the huge paycut). Is it worth investigating? I may. I just hate to feel like I'm moving backwards, even if it's for the better of my child. There's got to be a better alternative.

Ughh! Bodily Excrements!!

Yep. That's what I had to deal with, first thing in the morning. The dog decided that he was going to vomit and poo all over my bedroom. What a nightmare! So, it was me and the steam cleaner this morning for a solid hour. What fun! I new what kind of day it was going to be after that. Strangely, it's been a pretty good.

Not much to say right now. Hopefully, I'll have something interesting to say about the weekend.

Am I a Slave to My Scale?

I've been thinking about this today. I don't weigh everyday, by any means. Most times, I wait until Wednesday; however, I'm wondering if even that is too much. I think it's good to know about where you are as a bit of a gauge but, to actually use that as a guide on how good or bad you are or if you're successful? I don't know. Somehow, it isn't sitting right with me. Maybe it's because I'm stuck in this rut. I've been hanging out within the same three pounds for about two or three months. I know some people hit a plateau and stay there for even longer than I have, but it still doesn't make it any easier. I feel good I look tons better. Isn't that what matters? Yes it does, but I also know that it can be even better. I want to be there with all of my heart. I can practically taste it! For me, the 140's would be perfect. I know that sounds strange for someone of my height but, I'm telling you, it would look fantastic! Any smaller and I'd look sickly. It's just getting there. How can I get there?

I've increased my calorie intake (finally) to 1400. Hubby thinks that I wasn't getting nearly enough food to do the things that I am doing. I'm no marathon runner, but I'm pretty active for a chick nearly in her 30s. Lots of protein this week and I've included a few apples here and there (the red ones, even! I prefer green). I've also tried to keep up with the six small meals. I'll need to do some reading on how those should be divided out and what I should eat each time. This weekend, I'm going to start planning menus again. I really feel like I'm in control of the weekends when I have prepared food to eat, rather than eating out (I know that should help too). Send me good vibes, fellow weight losers out there. I'm really in need.

Up a Pound and Still Buying Clothes

I've got to stop this. I had goal items and everything to keep my need to buy smaller clothes under control. Well, there won't be a need to buy smaller clothes if my weight keeps fluctuating. Ughh! Currently, I am the keeper of all that is water, since TOM is on the way. It still doesn't make it any easier to see on the scale. I have gotten off to a good start this week so, I can only hope that it makes a difference over the next couple of weeks (keeping in mind that I keep up my good habits).

So, where does the buying come in? I've been eyeing a Newport-News sweater since I received the catalog late this summer. They had a Columbus Day sale (as did everyone in the U.S.) and they took 15% off the price. Well, I jumped on it. I was thinking, "Winter is coming and I'll need a sweater or two, " which is true, but I believe if I'd waited a bit longer I probably would have gotten the sweater for even less and perhaps in a different size.

Ugh! I'm really beating myself up and I should really stop. It's one day at a time one week at a time. I've come quite far and I can continue the journey. I know I can. I just gotta keep with the program.

What Holiday?

Yes. We were one of the lucky few that experiences Columbus Day as a holiday; however, I feel like I need about three more days. Man, am I tired! I'm not sure if it's the change in daylight hours, temperature or my diet but I am running on exhausted more than usual. I've said it before and I'll say it again, "I need a vacation!"

The weekend was a bust, but I did try to keep my portions under control (even though we were enjoying ourselves eating out a lot). Yesterday was the first time I cooked in several days. I made homemade chicken soup (remember, it's soups and chili this year?). It was wonderful! I even used whole wheat noodles. It must have made a difference because after I ate, I was full. Chicken soup never really makes me feel full.

I took some L-Carnitine this morning - the first dose in a long while. It's my attempt to commit to getting these last twenty pounds off. I don't know why it's been so hard, but I've got to keep my momentum. Too many holidays are coming up and it will be so much easier to maintain at the weight I want to be, rather than try to loose during all of the festivities. I don't know. I know people do it all the time (loose weight during the holidays, I mean). Perhaps I just have to suck it up and be one of those people.

I walked on the treadmill for 60 minutes yesterday morning. Boy, was I achey afterwards. I also did a Firm ab workout on Sunday morning. It didn't make me as sore as I thought I was going to be. I decided that I miss those tapes and will try to incorporate them in my routine (whatever that may be, this week).

Anyway, I'm sounding really wishy-washy, but I'm not trying to. I do have it in me to do this and I want to. I'm going to. I just keep falling off the wagon. I know. One day at a time. Today has gotten off to a pretty good start (except for the feeling tired). I'm sure I'll perk up in an hour or so.

The Month of Horror

I've been watching and rewatching a bunch of horror movies this month. This is definitely and appropriately the month I like to do this. Here's a list of what I've seen over the past several days (in order):

  • The Stepford Wives
  • Halloween
  • Friday the 13th
  • An American Werewolf in London
  • Love at First Bite (not scary, but fun)
  • Underworld

There are lots more I'll be checking out before this spooky month ends. I watch Rosemary's Baby every year and Carrie because they're my favorites (I know. I'm a total freak). I also have The Omen (freaks me out everytime I watch it), Amityville Horror (I read the book with some girlfriends in Junior High), Night of the Living Dead (the original), and Suspiria. I absolutely love horror movies, Halloween and this time of year in general. My mother always gives me a hard time about it. She's a old-fashioned Baptist who believes that Halloween is all about the devil. I know that Halloween is the day once known as O'Hallo's eve and it precedes the festival of the saints. I know the history, but for me, it's all about the mystery and fun. When we dress up, we never do anything gross or distasteful. We're not teaching our child to run out and worship the devil. Once upon a time, my mother was totally into it. In fact, she'd have me decided what I wanted to be months in advance so that she could either find my costume or find a pattern to make it. (I don't know why I'm going on and on about this). Let's change subjects.

I'm making more changes to my plan. I'm going to do the King, Prince and Pauper method again. I know that I'm probably eating way too much at dinner time (even though I still remain in my calories). I don't think I'm getting enough during the day, which is where the bulk of them should be. I know this, but I've somehow established this, "eat a big dinner" pattern and I've got to stop it. No amount of exercise changing in the world is going to get those mashed potatoes off my butt if I eat them before I go to bed. I've just got to do it. There's a lot that I've just got to do. This time of the year, as I've said time and time again, is so very difficult. My hubby mentioned that they've started putting the "big"meats on sale. He's like, "Oh, honey. They've got their rump roast buy one get one free". I'm like, "Uh, uh. None of that this year. That's what got me in trouble in the first place. All of those comfort foods." I can't do it, I tells yah. I just can't! It's chili and soup that will be bringing me comfort this year (except for Thanksgiving and Christmas, of course. Even then, I plan on doing a killer work out that morning just to make up for the damage). I would never have done that last year.

Okay, I'm just about finished.

I started thinking about school again. I guess hubby's been thinking along those lines too. We've just got to figure out my job situation before either one of us can go back and we both want to so badly. Keeping optimistic about the job in my town. There's gotta be one for me.

Hubby's Quality Time

Hubby took yet another day/night off, last night. I'm not complaining but, I definitely don't want him to endanger his job, you know? It's been really nice having him home at nights and I think he's been spoiling himself to that. The babe is coming down with something and, I gotta tell you, it's nice to have the back-up when the coughing fits start. (She was looking loads better this morning).

My new help is doing okay. She's not as dedicated as I'd like and a bit flaky, but she's smart and picks things up easily. I don't know. Maybe the work ethics of this new, up coming generation are a bit different. Our new receptionist has already missed loads of work. Okay, I understand already having planned a vacation when you're hired. That's perfectly reasonable. You tell your hiring entity that you have made those plans, then they make arrangements to cover for you if they decide to hire you, right? Well, this girl has not only taken some vacation time, she's taking sick time, migraine time and wedding time and she hasn't even earned any vacation days yet! Not that they're paying her for all the time missed but, where are the ethics? Man, I wouldn't have even tried to take time off until after my ninety days were up. It's just the way you do things. It's business etiquette. The folks who hired her are now totally doubting themselves. It's a mess!

I hope this doesn't happen to me too. My person is only part-time, but I feel she needs to be here, devoted to her job for the time that she's here. Is that too much to ask for?

I had a big bowl of hubby's chili last night for dinner and two chicken tenders. It was so yummy! Today, it's our gym's three year anniversary, so they're catering lunch in from Gandolfo's (an Italian deli). It should be good and healthy too. I also stopped at Ross Dress for Less on the way home last night to find some more Lee Jeans. I'm loving the pair I bought last week and wanted to see if I could find a similar pair in blue. I succeeded. I also purchased a cute new dress for the babe (complete with matching hat). She picked it out and this morning was really trying to wear it to school. I squashed that request quickly. That's all I need is a big tear in a brand new $32 dress (okay, I didn't pay that but, you know what I mean).

Tomorrow is weigh day and I'm not sure what to expect. We had a bit of a splurge over the weekend, but not too bad. I've been keeping up with my new, more intense workouts but I'm feeling super bloated. I know if the bloat is still here tomorrow that water is going to have an effect on what I see on the scale. I did, however, receive a nice compliment from a friend I haven't seen in about two years (we correspond mostly through email and the phone). She has not been aware of my new workout regime so, it wasn't an expected compliment. She said, "Oh my gosh! You're so skinny!" Needless to say, I was more than happy to hear that.

An Unexpected Weekend

I thought my weekend would be typical, but that's exactly how it didn't turn out. Friday, when I got home, hubby had prepared his famous chili. It was wonderful! I thought I would be feasting on it all weekend, but that was not to be. Saturday, I walked on the treadmill for a little over 50 minutes, than got the babe ready for her swimming lesson. We were at the pool for about an hour, than went to Burger Stop for a Shortstop meal for her and chicken sandwich for me. The sandwich (with a few of the babe's fries) actually filled me up. I put her down for her nap than took off again.

The cats were out of cat food, so I stopped at Sam's Club and got the cat food. Then, I went to the Movie Trading Company and picked up a couple of movies I'd been wanting to see. (Which reminds me, I really need to update the movie list. I did a lot of "scary movie" watching this weekend). Then I went to the liquor store. I was going to be brave and try some Sake for the first time, but then I changed my mind at the last minute and purchased a bottle of Kikkoman Plum Wine. Yum! Then, I went back home.

My sister-in-law just moved here and wanted to see the babe, so once she woke up from her nap, I got her ready and took her over for a visit. Then, I went to the grocery store and picked up a few things. After which, I went home and spent quality time with hubby. We sat up watching the classic Stepford Wives, with Katherine Ross, then we were going to watch the other movie I bought but, it didn't work. What a bummer! Hubby ran out and preceded to rent a collection of horror favorites: Friday the 13th, Halloween, An American Werewolf in London and Tales from the Darkside.

This probably isn't sounding like a terribly exciting weekend, but it was very different than what I envisioned my weekend would be. Hubby called in sick and stayed home with me Saturday night and last night. It was wonderful having him home with us. Yesterday, we decorated our front yard and stoop in Halloween garb. The babe loved that, but I think she may have contracted something (poor thing). Now, she's dealing with a bit of a cough. I hope it doesn't get worse.

We had HomeTown Buffet for breakfast, yesterday. I didn't eat much but something didn't agree with me. I had a passionate love affair with the bathroom last night. Not to get too detailed, it was not a pretty situation. Hubby thinks the tiny bit of corn beef hash may have sent my tummy into tailspins. It still floors me what I can and cannot eat anymore. Positive changes to your diet birth curious situations whenever you stray, I gotta tell yah.

Oh, Fall. How I Love Thee!

Yesterday as I was riding home, I noticed how beautiful all the trees are. I promised myself that I would remember my camera so that I could capture these beautiful fall moments. I not surprisingly forgot. Last year, I said the same thing, "The leaves are so pretty. I have to take a picture of this!" It never happened. I would include one here, if I ever made the effort. I think it's just forgetfulness. I get home and everything I want to remember flees from my brain. That's usually the drill with me. Anyway, the leaves are beautiful and I'm glad that Utah has true seasons like Nashville. Oh, but there's nothing like the trees in fall in the south and back east. Breathtaking!

Last night, hubby made chicken medallions in marsala sauce (preprepared, but still wonderful) and twice baked potatoes. We've had a good time together on his days off, not necessarily doing anything special, but just spending time together. You know, cuddle time. I absolutely love it. He goes back to work tonight so, I'll have to mentally prepare myself for sleeping alone again.

I want to take the little one to the corn maze this weekend. My hubby was all freaked out about the haunted version, until I told him that I would be taking her to the "family friendly" version. (Yeah, he's not the only one who wants to deal with nightmares. She'll probably be ready for the haunted stuff sometime next year).
